Bluegill
Appearance: Depending on where it's found, a Bluegill's color can vary from mottled green to pink to orange-red to silver-blue. However, in any instance, the fish is characterized by it's deep body, dark vertical bars and distinct blue-black flap on its gill cover. Most often, the Bluegill's breast is bright red.

Size: Bluegill usually weigh less than a pound, but fish up to a couple of pounds are caught from time to time

Where it's found: Bluegill are found in many different types of freshwater habitat. Small streams, rivers, ponds and reservoirs all hold populations of Bluegill.

What it eats: Bluegill primarily feed on insects, freshwater crustaceans and small baitfish.

Top lures & baits: Natural baits such as crickets, grasshoppers, grubs, nightcrawlers, minnows and small crawfish work well. Artificial lures imitating these natural prey items also account for plenty of Bluegill.

How it tastes: Bluegill are among the better tasting panfish.
