A Different Buzz for Bass

From late summer through fall, the vast majority of Texas lakes feature dense hydrilla beds or stands of lily pads. Where this thick vegetation is present, it houses an unbelievable amount of solid largemouth bass.

The problem with fishing these stands of vegetation is being able to present a bait deep into cover where the biggest fish are often hiding. Traditional surface baits, fitted with treble hooks, have limited use in this situation. Except for dragging around the edges or down "channels" within the beds, they foul far too often to be effective. Most often, Texas bass anglers have chosen buzzbaits to get up and over these beds. In recent years, weedless frogs have been all the rage. Each of these lures are able to climb over the dense vegetation without fouling and create enough commotion to illicit strikes. However, there are other, far less utilized, options available. Two that come to mind are the Stanley Buzzit and the Nemire Spoon Buzzer.

The Buzzit combines a buzzbait blade with the popular Stanley Ribbit Frog, effectively giving fishermen the best of both worlds - a buzzbait and weedless frog. The Buzzit comes in a variety of sizes, blade colors and body colors.

The Spoon Buzzer combines a buzzbait with a weedless spoon. Although they are not commonly used by Texas bass fishermen, weedless spoons have long been recognized as great big bass baits in other areas of the country. Combining the wobbling action of the spoon with the churning of the buzz blade gives fishermen an enticing combination that slides effortlessly over even the densest of grass. The Spoon Buzzer - and Spoon Buzzer Jr - comes in a variety of sizes and colors.

Both of these baits cast well and hold up to the abuse big bass can dish out. They are also versatile in that they can be dropped into holes and channels within the grass beds by pausing the retrieve. Because they feature a lure behind the buzz blade, they have fish-attracting action even when fished below the surface.
