Redfish
Appearance: Redfish (Red Drum) are reddish-brown with a white underside and 'false eye' near their tail. They have a rounded nose and oval-shaped body.
Size: Most reds taken inside Texas bays are less than 10 pounds. However, fish up to 40 or 50 pounds are taken in Gulf passes and along the beachfront during the fall 'bull red run.'
Where it's found: In the bays, Redfish like to feed on shallow flats. They also inhabit marshes and tidal creeks and are regularly found along the beachfront and in Gulf passes.
What it eats: Redfish are partial to a wide variety of finfish and crustaceans. Shrimp, crabs and finger mullet top the list.
Top lures & baits: Live baits such as shrimp, finger mullet and crab are good. Cut bait and cracked crab also work well, as do a variety of artificial lures including spoons, jigs and plugs.
How it tastes: Redfish offer very good fillets.
