Sheepshead
Appearance: Perhaps the most easily recognized fish on the coast, Sheepshead are deep bodied, white or grey overall with very distinct black vertical markings. They also have a mouth full of protruding, 'human-like' teeth.
Size: Sheepshead average a pound or two, but fish up to 10 pounds are taken.
Where it's found: Sheepshead like to hang around docks, pilings and bridges, especially in deeper bay waters or in channels, rivers and creeks.
What it eats: A forage feeder, Sheepshead eat a variety of crustaceans ranging from small crabs to sand fleas to shrimp.
Top lures & baits: Live or dead shrimp or fiddler crabs are the best baits.
How it tastes: Sheepshead are very good eating.
