Snook
Appearance: Snook are hard to miss, with a silvery-white body, dark green-black back and distinct black horizonal line down the length of the body. Snook also have yellowish fins and a large 'bass-like' mouth.
Size: Texas has two species of snook, Fat Snook and Common Snook. Fat Snook rarely exceed 16 inches. Common Snook get much larger. The average size Common Snook caught in Texas is 22 to 28 inches, but fish exceeding 30 inches are common and three-foot specimens are taken.
Where it's found: During the winter and spring, snook are found around deepwater structure. During summer and fall, they are common on the shallow flats and shallow structure of the Lower Laguna Madre. They are also found around the jetties at Port Mansfield and South Padre Island.
What it eats: Mullet, pinfish and shrimp top the Snook's menu.
Top lures & baits: Live baits such as jumbo shrimp and finger mullet work well. Topwater plugs, artificial shrimp, and soft-plastic jigs are good choices also.
How it tastes: Snook are among the finest eating fish on the coast.
